Lactate and BDNF: Key Mediators of Exercise Induced Neuroplasticity? (Muller, 2020)
Muller et al. (2020) suggest that the neurotrophin BDNF enhances neuroplasticity in the brain via different pathways (synaptogenesis, neurogenesis, long-term potentiation) and that increased BDNF levels follow high-intensity exercise.
BDNF stands for Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor. It is a protein which are essential for learning and memory, by maintaining and adapting synaptic connections in the brain. BDNF is also involved in the brain for regulating eating, drinking, and body weight.
